In 2007, the United States Mint began honoring our Nation’s First Spouses by issuing one-half ounce $10 gold coins featuring their images in the order they served as First Spouse. This bronze medal version bears the likeness of the Van Buren’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin.

Van Buren’s Liberty: The obverse, designed by United States Mint Engraver Christian Gobrecht, is a reproduction of the Liberty Seated Dime obverse coin design minted in the early 1800s. The reverse, designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Thomas Cleveland and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Jim Licaretz, depicts Martin Van Buren as a young man at the family-operated tavern in the village of Kinderhook, New York.
