Figure D8-1. Historical Perspecitve of per Capita Ethanol Consumption in the United States

Consumption of ethanol, in gallons, is provided for the period from 1850 to 2000. In 1850, per capita consumption (based on population age 15 and older) was 2.1 gallons. Consumption was not recorded during Prohibition and was at a low of 0.97 gallons in 1934. Consumption rose to a high of 2.76 gallons in both 1980 and 1981 before declining to 2.18 gallons in 2000.
