Kidz with Leukemia: A Space Adventure

Software that comprehensively addresses issues related to childhood leukemia is not widely available. Studies indicate that children eagerly seek to understand their illness and may adjust better if they have a greater understanding of that illness. "Kidz with Leukemia: A Space Adventure" is an interactive multimedia CD-ROM that informs children (ages 4 and up), their families, peers, and school personnel about leukemia and its treatment. Topics include: 1) tests (bone marrows, spinal taps, scans, blood tests, heart tests); 2) treatment (chemotherapy, radiation therapy, research/clinical trials); 3) health care team and hospital tour; 4) things children can do to make themselves feel better (food issues, infection control, rest and relaxation techniques, pain control, creative arts); 5) living with leukemia (family, friends, school); and 6) a reference section (medicine database, frequently asked questions). Adults can also access the Physicians' Data Query and link to Internet sites related to childhood leukemia. Games, music, graphics, animation, videos, and still photographs make this self-paced instructional program fun and interesting for all users. It is being developed on a PC using Macromedia Authorware, Adobe Photoshop, and Sound Forge. This project is funded by a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Cancer Institute.
