North Dakota Disaster Recovery Update

BISMARCK, N.D. -- The following is a disaster recovery update of the assistance being provided to North Dakota residents in the 42 declared counties and four Indian Reservations.
- To date, more than 6,340 residents in the 42 declared counties and four Indian Reservations have registered for disaster assistance.
- More than 3,750 disaster housing checks totaling more than $5 million have been issued to individuals to assist with temporary housing and minor home repairs which includes repetitive water damage.
- State officials are processing more than 2,900 referrals for Individual and Family Grant (IFG) assistance. IFG may be used to cover disaster-related expenses, such as essential home repairs, replacement of personal property, transportation, and necessary expenses not covered by insurance or other programs.
- The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved more than $1.8 million in low-interest disaster loans for home and business repair.
- State/federal disaster housing inspectors are in the field examining residential damage.
- Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) remains available through the North Dakota Job Service for individuals who lost income because of the disaster including farmers, ranchers, farm workers, migrant farm workers, and other self-employed individuals. To date, more than 4,985 claims have been filed for DUA. More than $1,265,000 has already been disbursed.
The deadline for filing an application with North Dakota Job Service for DUA closed July 21, for individuals in the 34 counties and on the three Indian reservations initially designated as disaster areas. Individuals in Burke, Divide, Sioux, and Williams counties and on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation (the portion in North Dakota) may continue to apply for DUA until August 11; while individuals in Cavalier, Eddy, Morton and Mercer counties have until August 13 to file.
- Officials from the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program have conducted briefings to local officials in Minot, Rugby, Grand Forks, Valley City and Bismarck. Draft Hazard Mitigation Grant Program project applications are due to the state by August 30, 1999. The Hazard Mitigation Program funds projects that help prevent the effects of future disasters.
- Individuals may apply for disaster assistance by calling FEMA's toll-free registration line at 1-800-462-9029. The line is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday.
