WESTERN RECOGNIZES GILBERT RESIDENT FOR EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE

Lakewood, Colo. — Gilbert resident Penny Casey will receive Western Area Power Administration’s highest honor at a ceremony Aug. 19 at Western's Desert Southwest office. Western’s Administrator Tim Meeks will present Casey with Western’s Exceptional Service Award during the ceremony.

Casey is Desert Southwest’s Energy Management and Marketing Office manager. She began her Federal career in 1982 as a clerk typist for the U.S. Army.  She joined Western in 1998 as a public utilities specialist for the Desert Southwest office while attending Strayer College.

Casey was nominated for the ESA by co-workers for her leadership skills. She exemplified herself as an outstanding manager for Western by taking on every challenge, regardless of the obstacles or difficulty, and leading each to a successful conclusion.

In addition, Casey is recognized for creating an Energy Management and Marketing Office for the Desert Southwest Region from scratch. This office was created to address Federal Energy Regulatory Commission requirements to separate transmission and marketing functions, and increasing interest by customers to perform marketing and scheduling services on their behalf. EMMO represents Western on merchant forums and regional marketing groups. Amazingly, no appropriations were provided to establish the office. All services provided by this office continue to be financed through customer funding, allowing DSW to use appropriated funds for other purposes. “Penny manages an efficient office on a shoestring budget with overwhelming success and accuracy setting an example for others to follow,” said Debby Emler, Desert Southwest Federal Power Programs Manager.

Originally from Quincy, Ill.,Casey and her husband, Jimm, live in Gilbert, Ariz., and have five children: Jeremy, Justin, Jennifer, Cory and Melissa.  She enjoys family time, camping, 1880s reenactments and parades and learning sign language.

The ESA is the highest award granted by Western's Administrator. In addition to serving Western for at least five years, employees must meet four criteria to earn this recognition, including:
