HerbMed™ is an interactive, electronic herbal database providing hyperlinked access to the scientific data underlying the use of herbs for health. It is an evidence-based information resource, incorporating dynamic updates, designed and built by the Alternative Medicine Foundation to serve the needs of health care professionals, pharmacists, researchers, and consumers. HerbMed™ is easily navigable and fully searchable by own choice keywords, such as disease category, and each herb is characterized by common name and Latin binomial. The information is as impartial as possible and sorted into six clear categories (Evidence for Activity; Warnings; Methods of Preparation; Mixtures; Mechanisms of Action; Miscellaneous). Users can determine which level of evidence they find credible or useful. Information on herbs links directly to the scientific literature using PubMed, the free interface for MEDLINE, and to other research resources. This is a high leverage, minimal investment projectappropriate for an underfunded research area. Emphasis is on providing open, global access to basic research material, neutral presentation of relevant information, and ensuring current and comprehensive content, with frequent updates.
