INFORMATION MEMORANDUM
AoA-IM-97-23

TO : STATE AGENCIES ON AGING ADMINISTERING PLANS UNDER TITLE III OF THE OLDER AMERICANS ACT OF 1965, AS AMENDED

SUBJECT : "Developing Objectives for Healthy People 2010" -Guide

The purpose of this memorandum is to transmit a copy of the guide titled, "Developing Objectives for Healthy People 2010." It is with great pleasure that we invite you to participate in the process of developing Healthy People 2010, the third set of national health promotion and disease prevention objectives. This guide includes background on the Healthy People initiative, the participants, a calendar of major events, and ways the public can help develop objectives.

Proposed objectives and comments on the proposed structure may be submitted through December 15, 1997. In the fall of 1998, a draft of Healthy People 2010 objectives will be circulated for public review and comment. We encourage everyone to participate in these and other Healthy People 2010 development activities to ensure that this initiative reflects the broad scope of public health in the United States.

The Healthy People Steering Committee, the Healthy People Work Group Coordinators, and the Secretary's Council on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives for 2010 are working to develop a suggested framework for Healthy People 2010. A call for comments on the proposed framework and recommendations for alternative approaches will be announced in the Federal Register in the fall of 1997. The call for comments on the framework is located on page 21 of this guide. Please feel free to use any part of the guide in organizational newsletters to spread the word about the comment period on the proposed Healthy People 2010 framework. Any group or person may provide comments.

Welcome aboard to Healthy People 2010.
