SUBJECT2000 Census Population figures for the 60+ Population for States and Territories

LEGAL AND RELATED REFERENCES : Older Americans Act, As Amended


The purpose of this memorandum is to transmit current figures for the population 60 years of age and older (60+) for the states and U.S. territories.  The attached table presents the most recent population figures available from the U.S. Bureau of the Census, and will be used by the Administration on Aging to determine formula grant awards during fiscal year 2002 under Title III of the Older Americans Act.  Also attached, for your information, are several other population tables by age groups as well as tables by race and Hispanic origin (using the new OMB racial categories) for the 60+ and 65+ population.

The figures for the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico are Census population counts (100 percent data) as of April 1, 2000.  The figures for American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, and the Virgin Islands are 2000 mid-year Census estimates from the Census International Data Base.
