Health Habit Survey (HHS)

Health Habit Survey (HHS) is a bilingual (English or Spanish) multimedia program for screening risky drinking in primary care settings. HHS also has components about smoking, exercise, and diet. The alcohol questions used in the program come from a WHO measure called the AUDIT. If the program user, typically a primary care or ER patient, is found to be in the category of risky drinker, he or she also receives stages of change questions regarding their readiness to change their drinking patterns. Upon completion of the HHS the patient receives onscreen and printed feedback regarding their drinking pattern. The program also provides feedback about the smoking, diet, and exercise behaviors of the patient. Finally, if the patient elects to share the results of the HHS with his or her physician/nurse, a page of information that includes tailored intervention strategies is printed for the clinician. HHS has been thoroughly tested as part of a large, multi-site, clinical trial and has been found to substantially improve detection of risky drinkers and reduce drinking six-months post intervention. The program is a CD-ROM and uses a touch screen kiosk in a medical area.
