The Rebels Program

The Rebels program is a 3-D, CD-ROM, multimedia game to help teens who are smokers quit and prevent smoking and tobacco use in those who have not yet begun. The program user is "transported" to the year 2080. The tobacco companies have taken over and are forcing children to begin smoking at 5 years of age. A group of non-smoking, rebel teens are fighting against a shadowy figure called the Chairman who runs the greedy "Tobacco Syndicate." The program user is called upon to help the rebels in their quest. The experience of Rebels is highly tailored and is dependent upon the program user's past and current history of tobacco. If the teen is a smoker or uses other forms of tobacco, there is further tailoring regarding readiness to change. Rebels is being developed with an SBIR grant from the National Cancer Institute. In early 2000 the program will be tested as part of a clinical trial at 12 Massachusetts high schools. The program is highly interactive and engaging. Even in initial trials it is eagerly accepted by teen smokers and non-smokers. It is a cross-platform CD-ROM with extensive graphics and video.
