The Freeze-Framer®

The Freeze-Framer® is an interactive educational tool (CD-ROM, sensor) for PCs designed to help adults and children reduce stress and increase emotional stability and physiological coherence (shown to increase cognitive performance, lower blood pressure and facilitate healing processes). The Freeze-Framer calculates heart rate, entrainment levels, accumulated entrainment score, and heart rate variability (HRV) power spectrum. Developed by HeartMath LLC, this technology has been used with patients and providers for self-care, and with community stakeholders, including school children and police, for health promotion and violence prevention. Physiological coherence is characterized by increased synchronization and entrainment of the body's natural rhythms, including heart rhythms, breathing patterns, blood pressure oscillations, and autonomic nervous system rhythms. This state of physiological efficiency enhances health and performance. The Freeze-Framer displays physiological coherence levels by detecting the pulse with a fingertip sensor that plugs into the serial port, then processes heart rhythms through a mathematical algorithm to provide a continuous representation of one's physiological state. Each session's data can be saved for later review and analysis. Displays include HRV trace, and games (meadow, balloon, rainbow), which provide enjoyable feedback as one achieves health-promoting internal states.
