SCOPE: Strategic Communication and Planning

SCOPE training software is the chief learning tool for participants in the Advances in Family Health Communication workshops conducted worldwide by Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs (JHU/CCP). Moving through a detailed 5-step planning process, participants use SCOPE to design health communication programs for their own countries. SCOPE uses computer technology to integrate communication theory and health intervention strategies with actual data from specific countries, much of it downloaded from the Web. For example, SCOPE analyzes a health program's strengths and weaknesses using in-depth guide questions. SCOPE creates graphs of health indicators for trend analysis and maps health indicators so that users can geographically focus health intervention planning. SCOPE provides a means for users to identify program objectives and key audience benefits before planning program development. SCOPE guides users in creating an audience profile of populations in need of health services. SCOPE encourages users to "think big" by helping them to illustrate macro level strategic concepts. It provides users with the means to develop and pretest programs using storyboards and provides real media production costs so users can budget for intervention programs. Twenty versions have been developed in five languages and over 1,600 people have been trained on SCOPE. A version is now being developed for use as a stand alone application for health communication planning on the job. Developed by JHU/CCP. Runs on Windows 3.1, Windows 95/98, and Windows NT.
