WESTERN JOINS EPA CHANGE THE WORLD CAMPAIGN

LAKEWOOD, Colo.—Western Area Power Administration today announced that it has joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s "Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR" campaign to encourage employees to reduce energy use in their homes.

The Federal power marketing administration is also encouraging its hydropower customers to spread the word to their consumers. The campaign takes the successful "Change a Light" pledge drive to the next level by suggesting a range of individual actions Americans can take to fight global warming, reduce energy bills and cut greenhouse gas emissions. "Western and its customers know that energy efficiency is one of the most cost-effective resources," said Energy Services Manager Ron Horstman. "The ’Change the World’ pledge drive is an opportunity to remind individuals that we can all make a difference by taking energy-saving steps at home and in the workplace."

Western is urging employees to take the ENERGY STAR Pledge by visiting www.energystar.gov and sharing their energy-saving story to inspire others to make energy-efficient changes. Municipal utilities and electric cooperatives, like the ones Western serves, will find a variety of resources on the ENERGY STAR Web site to launch their own campaigns, as well.

The ENERGY STAR Pledge at energystar.gov/changetheworld encourages Americans to:

If every American household took the actions in the pledge, we would save more than 110 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, more than $18 billion in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to more than 18 million cars.

“Becoming part of the solution to global warming takes less time and effort than you might think. You can start by taking simple steps like changing a light or looking for the ENERGY STAR when you purchase new products,” said Kathleen Hogan, Director of the Climate Protection Partnerships Division at EPA.  “We are delighted to work with Western Area Power Administration and others across the country helping in the fight against global warming. Together, we can all make a difference and protect our environment through simple everyday actions.”

Western Area Power Administration annually markets and transmits more than 10,000 megawatts of power from hydroelectric powerplants owned and operated by the Bureau of Reclamation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 15 western and central states.  It is part of the Department of Energy.
