NURP Interns featured in the Washington Post (entered 08/08/03)

NURP is proud to announce that its summer interns were highlighted in a Washington Post Article on August 7, 2003 entitled "Minorities Exploring Science at NOAA: Internships Promote Careers in Research." See the web link below to view the article.

This summer NURP mentored two minority students as part of the Educational Partnership Program for Minority Serving Institutions (EPP/MSI). Both students are undergraduates at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia and were supervised by Mr. Gene Smith. For their six-week projects, the two interns focused on topics that are of keen interest to NURP.

Thomas Searle, a senior majoring in math and physics, for his project reviewed the technologies used in underwater communications, both diver to diver and diver to surface support ship, to determine the pros/cons of these technologies.

Chaka Johnson, a senior majoring in math and mechanical engineering, for his project reviewed the available methods for removing carbon dioxide from NOAA's Aquarius.

Both Thomas and Chaka became so interested in underwater technology that they were scuba certified during their internship with NURP.
