Dr. Peter J. Auster, Science Director at NURPs North Atlantic
and Great Lakes Center at the University of Connecticut, Avery Point
recently published a paper on the use of AUVs to Census Mobile Faunau
in the Marine Technology Society Journal. The focus of his paper
was how configuration of still and video camera systems on AUVs
effect the ability to census mobile fauna in terms of measuring
diversity and abundance. Findings indicate traditional downlooking
or vertically mounted cameras and lighting have limitations caused
by avoidance and that AUV designs should accommodate forward or
side looking cameras and lighting to support improved detection
of mobile animals.
