Crude and Age-Adjusted Hospital Discharge Rates for Nontraumatic Lower Extremity Amputation per 1,000 Diabetic Population, United States, 1980�05
The crude and age-adjusted rate of hospital discharge with for nontraumatic lower extremity (LEA) per 1,000 persons with diabetes increased after the 1983 implementation of the prospective reimbursement system by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Ser vices, showed little change in the mid-to-late 1980s, and then began increasing in the early 1990s. After peaking in 1996, LEA rates decreased. During this period, trends in crude and age-adjusted hospital discharge rates for LEA were similar. In 2005, the crude LEA rate was 4.3 per 1,000 persons with diabetes.
