Helpful Information for FIRE

For tax year 2008 forms filed in calendar year 2009, IRS will no longer accept tape cartridges for the filing of Information Returns.  Electronic filing will be the ONLY acceptable method to file Information Returns with the IRS.

For more information you may contact the Enterprise Computing Center - MTB (ECC-MTB) Customer Service Section, toll-free at 866-455-7438.  IRS personnel are available Monday through Friday, 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. EST.   Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD) can be reached at 304-267-3367.

Information Returns can be filed electronically, however, you must have software that can produce the file in the proper format as required by Publication 1220. IRS does not provide an electronic fill-in form option. If you do have the software that can create the file in the proper format and you have a TCC (Transmitter Control Code) you can obtain more information by downloading Publication 3609, FIRE (Filing Information Returns Electronically).

Note: Forms W-2 are filed with the Social Security Administration (SSA). For more information log on to SSA's employer page.
