November 14, 2002, Washington, DC—Susan Schanlaber of Aurora, Illinois, today was sworn in for a four-year term of office as an expert member of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP). Clay Johnson, III, assistant to the President for presidential personnel, presided over the ceremony held at the Navy Museum.

"The President's selection of Susan Schanlaber will be a great benefit to the ACHP," said Chairman John L. Nau, III. "Her expertise in adaptive reuse of historic structures exemplifies the trend towards preserving America's heritage by allowing historic structures to serve contemporary needs. She is a great asset to the ACHP."

Schanlaber is the president and CEO of The Landmark Group of Companies, headquartered in an Aurora, Illinois, historic landmark firehouse. She is founder and owner of the company, which specializes in the acquisition, renovation, and management of its multimillion dollar portfolio of Chicago-area historic properties.

Schanlaber is a National Trust for Historic Preservation Advisor Emeritus, after completing a nine-year term on the Board of Advisors in October 2002. She also serves on the Chicago Advisory Board of The Trust for Public Land and the Board of the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois in Chicago. Having worked on the finance committees of several local, State, and Federal elected officials, she continues, as she has since 1986, on the Congressional finance committee of Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert (R-IL).

An independent Federal agency, the ACHP promotes historic preservation nationally by providing a forum for influencing Federal activities, programs, and policies that impact historic properties by advising the President and Congress, advocating preservation policy, improving Federal preservation programs, protecting historic properties, and educating stakeholders and the public.
