Electronic Funds Withdrawal and Credit or Debit Card Payment Options for Businesses

 

Who Can Participate?

  • Taxpayers who file electronically can e-file and e-pay in a single step by authorizing an electronic funds withdrawal via tax preparation software or a tax professional.

  • Regardless of how the return is filed, taxpayers can pay by phone or Internet using a credit or debit card.

What Types of Business Taxes Can Be Paid Electronically?

The following types of balance due business taxes can be paid by electronic funds withdrawal and credit or debit card:

Form 940 series balance due return, Employer’s Annual Federal Unemployment (FUTA) Tax Return

E-file Form 940/940-PR
and simultaneously e-pay
via tax preparation software or a tax professional. This payment option is available to users of the Employment Tax e-file System.
E-pay balance due by phone or Internet through a service provider (Tax Year 1999 and after).
Form 941 series balance due return, Employer’s Quarterly Federal Tax Return E-file Form 941/941-PR/
941-SS and simultaneously e-pay via tax preparation software or a tax professional. This payment option is available to users
of the Employment Tax e-file System.
E-pay balance due by phone or Internet through a service provider (Tax Year 1999 and after).
Form 943 balance due return, Employer's Annual Tax Return for Agricultural Employees Not applicable E-pay balance due by phone or Internet through a service provider (Tax Year 1999 and after).
Form 944 balance due return, Employer's Annual Federal Tax Return E-file Form 944 and simultaneously e-pay via tax preparation software or a tax professional. This payment option is available to users
of the Employment Tax e-file System.

  • All electronic funds withdrawal and credit or debit card payments must be at
    least $1.

  • Employment tax form and excise tax form payments should be made in dollars and cents for card payments, as well as EFW payments.

  • All other EFW payments should be made in whole dollars (round to the nearest whole dollar).

  • Making an electronic payment eliminates the need to submit an associated payment voucher.

  • Card payment service providers charge a fee for their service.  This fee can be deducted as a business expense, when paid or incurred by the business.

  • Federal tax deposits (FTD Coupons) cannot be made through these options.  Amounts not properly deposited may be subject to a 10% penalty for failure to deposit through an authorized financial institution or EFTPS.  It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that all taxes are paid or deposited correctly and on time.  Please refer to Publication 15 (Circular E), Employer's Tax Guide for additional information explaining the requirements for paying employment taxes.


When Can Electronic Funds Withdrawal and Credit or Debit Card Payments Be Made?

Form 940 series, Employer’s Annual Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA) Return

  • For EFW, this option is only available at the time the electronic return is filed.

  • For card payments, this option is available year round.

Form 941 series,  Employer’s Quarterly Federal Tax Return

  • For EFW, this option is only available at the time the electronic return is filed.

  • For card payments, this option is available year round.

Form 943 series,  Employer’s Annual Tax Return for Agricultural Employees

  • This option is only available for card payments.

  • This option is available year round.

Form 944 series, Employer's Annual Federal Tax Return

  • For EFW, this option is only available at the time the electronic return is filed.  Payment can be scheduled up to the due date of the return.

  • For card payments, this option is available year round.

Form 945 series,  Annual Return of Withheld Federal Income Tax

  • This option is only available for card payments.

  • This option is available year round.

Form 990-PF,  Return of Private Foundation or Section 4947(a)(1) Nonexempt Charitable Trust Treated as a Private Foundation

  • This option is only available through Electronic Funds Withdrawal.
  • Payment can be scheduled up to the due date of the return.

Form 1041, U. S. Income Tax Return for Estates and Trusts

  • This option is only available through Electronic Funds Withdrawal.
  • This option is available year round.

Form 1065,  U.S. Return of Partnership Income and Form 1065-B, U.S. Return of Income for Electing Large Partnerships

  • This option is only available through Electronic Funds Withdrawal.
  • Payment can be scheduled up to the due date of the return.
