Honor fallen detective

On Jan. 13, 2001, Riverside police Detective Doug Jacobs was killed in the line of duty ("Officers honor fallen comrades," Dec. 14, 2004).

The eighth anniversary of his death came and went apparently unnoticed by the newspaper, which nonetheless devoted pages to marking the 10-year anniversary of the shooting death of Tyisha Miller by police officers.

Pricey TV book

Wow! We might be able to get The Press-Enterprise's TV book back.

Oops. I just read the fine print. The TV book will cost 50 cents a week ($2 extra per month) for something we used to get "free."

Do the people who run the newspaper think that subscribers have not noticed that it is much thinner, with less news in it?

I am a most disappointed subscriber.

I'm astounded that letter writer Brian Williams thinks that the Rod Blagojevich saga is unusual in U.S. politics ("Shameless in Illinois," Your Views, Jan. 12).

For some reason, he thinks that laws and constitutionality should be discarded in this one case.

Send intruders home

Using op-ed writer William Snaer's logic, an intruder could send his kids to school and charge the tuition to Snaer's account, break into Snaer's house, eat his food and use his health insurance card ("Border sanity," Inland Views, Jan. 4).

Mass deportations? Sure

What is the difference between prostitution and illegal border crossings ("Border sanity," Inland Views, Jan. 4)?

They both say: anything for a buck; no rules. Why doesn't America enforce the law?

Postmus should quit

My wife, Loret, and I both recently had colds for about a week. These annoyances seem to hang on longer each year.

Anyway, I volunteered to go, alone, to the market to replenish our supply of cold remedies, vitamins and chicken soup.

Wandering around full of my own bad germs got me thinking. Who decided that it was a great idea to put a toddler seat on the grocery cart handlebar?

Scores tell the story

Letter writer Charles M. Renno complains about too many boring college bowl games and questions the matchups and drawing power of teams that have mediocre records ("College bowl games -- boring!" Your Views, Jan. 5).

Strife tempers glee

Watching the Rose Parade made me feel a little sad ("Parade brought relief," Your Views, Jan. 7).

Seeing those wonderful students from all over looking happy and healthy made me feel so wonderful. But I guess I felt a little sad that Israel, Iran, Iraq, Turkey and other nations couldn't see what real freedom looks like.

Amid all the bad news regarding the economy -- businesses folding and jobs being lost -- wars, corruption and more, anyone who watched the Rose Parade could not help but feel uplifted ("Another smash performance," Jan. 2).

I felt a few hours of joy, and sincere pride in America when the B-2 bomber arrived from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri.

In a recent letter to the editor, Terence McDonald uses emotion rather than intellect ("Stop aiding Israel," Your Views, Jan. 2).

Israel did not provoke the Palestinians. The Palestinians provoked Israel.

Israel left Gaza to Palestinian occupation and rule. Yet, Hamas continued to fire rockets on Israel. Israel has the right -- no, the obligation -- to protect its citizens. It is doing that.

Baca has lost touch

Joe Baca is way off course ("New term, fresh agenda," Dec. 30).

Rep. Baca, D-Rialto, must have taken a wrong turn at the border. He thinks he represents Mexicans in the U.S. Congress. Tell him that this is America and that he should work for American citizens.

Don't feel for Hamas

Israel is assaulting Hamas in Gaza, yet letter writer Ghayth Adhami seems to believe that the attacks are unjustified and cruel ("Support Palestinians," Your Views, Dec. 31).
