National Hispanic Council on Aging Conference
Conference Will Kick Off 2009 HHS Fall Medicare Open Enrollment Season

U. S. Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary for Aging Josefina G. Carbonell will deliver a keynote address at the National Hispanic Council on Aging (NHCOA) Annual Conference in Albuquerque, N.M., on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008.
Assistant Secretary Carbonell will also be joined by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Acting Administrator Kerry Weems to kick off the 2009 Fall Medicare Open Enrollment season.

Background:
Assistant Secretary Carbonell will discuss national efforts to help Hispanic elders and their families live longer, healthier lives through prevention practices to help eliminate health disparities that exist among Hispanic elders. The Assistant Secretary’s remarks will also cover efforts to streamline access to long term supports in the local community and advance consumer direction and choice. Assistant Secretary Carbonell will talk about exciting partnerships being launched at the national, state and local level to further healthy aging and care for older Hispanic elders, with a special focus on diabetes.
Assistant Secretary Carbonell will also be joined by CMS Acting Administrator Kerry Weems who will preview the 2009 Fall Medicare Open Enrollment campaign, which runs from Nov. 15 to Dec. 31, 2008. This effort will reach people with Medicare all across the country to provide essential information about the upcoming enrollment season, prevention benefits and Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage as well as efforts to provide extra help to those in need.
The NHCOA is the premier Washington, D.C.-based non-profit that works to improve the quality of life for Hispanic older adults, their families, and their communities. The NHCOA Annual Conference, “Transforming the Future of Aging: Sharing the Best of Us to Empower Hispanic Older Adults and their Families,” will take place from Nov. 4 through Nov. 7, 2008.
