1 . How can I tell which virus software I am using?
Each of the virus software packages places an icon on your task bar.

  • McAfee - Red "M" (includes McAfee Agent and VirusScan Enterprise)
  • Symantec - Gold Shield Symantec Anti-Virus.

    2 . How do I know if my files are up to date?
    McAfee Virus-Scan:
    • Option 1:
      • At the bottom right on your task bar - Right click on the Red "M".
      • In the pop-up menu, select VirusScan Enterprise.
      • Then, select "Update Now". This will start your update.
      • When update is completed, click on "Close" to close McAfee AutoUpdate
    • Option 2:
      • At the bottom right on your task bar - Right click on the Red "M".
      • In the pop-up menu, select VirusScan Enterprise.
      • Then, select "About VirusScan Enterprise". This will show
        • DAT Version: This is your current DAT (example would be 5377)
        • DAT Created On: This is the DAT release day.
      • To see if your machine has the current DAT go to: http://antivirus.nih.gov.
      • Under "Current client downloads" on the side bar look for "VScan Engine/Dat (SuperDat)" this is the current DAT that your machine should be up-to-date with
      • If your machine is not up-to-date with the current DAT then you will need to click on the DAT under "Current Client Downloads" for "VScan Engine/Dat (SuperDat)"
    Symantec Anti-Virus:
    Double-click on the gold shield and click the button "LiveUpdate…"

    3 . How can I run a virus scan manually?

    McAfee VirusScan

    If you are using a version of VirusScan prior to version 8.5.0i, you should upgrade.

    For VirusScan Enterprise 8.5.0i:
    • Right-click on the Red "M" at the bottom right of your task bar.
    • Select VirusScan Enterprise.
    • In the pop-up menu, select "On Demand Scan…"
    • In the "On Demand Scan" dialog box, click on the "Start" button.

    Symantec Anti-Virus
    • Double-click on the Gold Shield icon at the bottom right of your task bar.
    • In the left pane of the dialog box that appears, highlight "Full Scan Option".
    • On the right side of the dialog box, click on the "Scan" button.

    4 . What is Spam?
    The most basic definition of Spam is Unsolicited Commercial bulk Email (UCE). This means email that is sent to many people who didn't ask/sign up for it, and it is commercial in nature. However not all Spam is commercial in nature. Some may appear to originate from a particular person (rather than a commercial business) asking for your assistance.
