Installing VirusScan 7.0

Installing VirusScan 7.0 for Windows NT/2000/XP

Note: Please print this page before starting the installation. These instructions assume the installation is for an unmanaged client - e.g. a home machine. This product is not for use with machines running Windows 95/98/ME. For machines running Windows 95/98/ME install VirusScan 4.5.1 SP1.


VirusScan must be installed under the local administrator account

  1. Download VirusScan 7.0 from the NIH Antivirus site.
  2. Remove any antivirus software currently installed using add/remove programs or vendor recommended method.
  3. Extract the files to a temporary directory (such as c:\temp).
  4. Run setup.exe.
  5. Change license type to perpetual. Agree to the license.
  6. Select Typical installation.
  7. Select Install.
  8. De-select Update Now and Run On-Demand Scan. Select Finish.
  9. Reboot your machine.
  10. Open the VirusScan console by right clicking the Vshield in the system tray (the blue and red shield near the clock) and selecting VirusScan console.
  11. Right click the AutoUpdate Task and select start. This will update the product to the current definitions.
    Note: To update automatically from the NIH Antivirus site rather then McAfee or in addition to McAfee you will need to edit your autoupdate repository list:
    1. Launch the VirusScan console
    2. Select Tools then "Edit autoupdate repository list..."
    3. Select Add
    4. Create a name for the repository. This is a name of your choice to identify the repository on the repository list.
    5. Leave the defaults except change the URL to antivirus.nih.gov/4.x
    6. Select Ok twice.
  12. Virusscan 7.0 is now installed and up to date. See configuration instructions for recommended configuration for scanning and scheduled updating.

Configuring VirusScan 7.0 for Windows NT/2000/XP

Note: Please print this page before configuring VirusScan 7.0. These instructions assume the configuration is for an unmanaged client - e.g. a home machine.
  1. Open the VirusScan console by right clicking the Vshield in the system tray (the blue and red shield near the clock) and selecting VirusScan console.
  2. Double-click on On-Access Scan.
  3. Change the quarantine directory to C:\quarantine or directory of your choice.
  4. Select the All Processes icon on the left side of the window and then select the Advanced tab.
  5. Enable Find potentially unwanted programs, Scan inside archives and Decode MIME encoded files. Select Ok.
  6. Double-Click AutoUpdate.
    Note: At this time CIT does not have an internal update site for the NIH for use with VirusScan 7.0. When the site becomes available these instructions will be updated.
  7. Select Schedule, then select the Schedule tab.
  8. Set the Schedule appropriate for your use. It is recommended to have AutoUpdate run Daily. Select OK.
  9. Double-Click Scan All Fixed Disks.
  10. Select the Detection tab.
  11. Enable Scan inside archives and Decode MIME encoded files.
  12. Select the Advanced tab.
  13. Enable Find potentially unwanted programs and Rescan all files when DAT files are updated.
  14. Select the Schedule button on the right hand side.
  15. Enable scheduled task. Enter in credentials of the administrator account or account with administrator privileges.
  16. Select the Schedule tab.
  17. Set the Schedule appropriate for your use. It is recommended to have a scan run weekly. Select OK twice.
  18. Configuration complete.
