Installing Virusscan 4.5.1

Installing and Configuring Virusscan 4.5.1 and Service Pack 1

Note: Please print this page before starting the installation. VirusScan must be installed as the local administrator account.
  1. Uninstall any antivirus software currently installed. Check with the manufacturer for uninstall instructions. (Reboot after removal).

  2. Create a folder to download VirusScan to (e.g. C:\Vscan451).

  3. Go to http://antivirus.nih.gov and download VirusScan 4.5.1 to the folder that was just created. The link for 4.5.1 is under the Current Client Downloads.

  4. Download Service Pack 1 to the same location as Virusscan 4.5.1. The link for Service Pack 1 is under the Current Client Downloads.

  5. Double click the vsc451l.exe icon and extract the files to the current folder.

  6. Double click the setup icon in the current folder.
    Note: You may be prompted to reboot during installation.

  7. Select standard security, then select Next.

  8. Select Typical setup then select Next.

  9. Select Install.

  10. Uncheck all boxes. Some boxes may be grayed out. Select Next. This will start a scan of the boot record.

  11. After the scan is finished, exit the window. Select Wait and Run AutoUpdate Later. Select next.

  12. Select Finish.

  13. Bring up the Console by double clicking the magnifying glass icon in the system tray (Near the system clock, typically located in the right hand corner of your display screen).

  14. Highlight Scan My Computer and select Configure.

  15. Select All Files and Compressed Files. Select Advanced, Enable Heuristic Scanning, Enable Macro and Program File Heuristic Scanning. Select OK.

  16. Select Action Tab, Uncheck Stop Scan. Select Exclusion and remove any exclusions (unless situation dictates otherwise). Select OK.

  17. From the console highlight VShield and select configure.

  18. Select configuration options. Select OK.
    Note: Consult with your ISSO for your IC's recommended options/preferred configuration.

  19. Select E-Mail Scan on the left side Column. Enable Scanning of Email attachments. Select the E-mail System(s) appropriate for your IC. Select OK.

  20. Highlight AutoUpdate and select Configure. Select Add or Edit. Edit if there is a task created, Add if there is not.
    Note: These instructions assume that your computer is on the NIH network. If it is not consult with your ISSO for the preferred update location.

  21. Set Site Name to: NIH AV and set FTP Site to: antivirus.nih.gov/4.x (Or the location given to you by your ISSO). Select OK 2 times.

  22. Select Properties, then Schedule. Enable Schedule and set appropriate for you (e.g. Daily At 3am when the computer is on but not in use or as designated by your ISSO). Select OK.

  23. Highlight AutoUpgrade. Select Configure. Select Add or Edit. Edit if there is a task created, Add if there is not.

  24. Set Site to: NIH AV and set FTP Site to: antivirus.nih.gov/4.x/upgrade (Or the location given to you by your ISSO). Select OK 2 times.

  25. Select Properties, then Schedule. Enable Schedule and set appropriate for you (e.g. Daily At 3:30am when the computer is on but not in use or as designated by your ISSO). Select OK.

  26. Run the AutoUpdate Task by highlighting AutoUpdate and selecting Start.

  27. When the task is finished, exit the Console.

  28. Return to the folder that Service Pack 1 was downloaded to and double click the VSC451LENS1.exe icon.

  29. Extract the files to the same folder that the Service Pack 1 was downloaded to. If prompted to overwrite files select yes to all.
  30. Double click the VSC451S1.EXE icon.

  31. Select Next.

  32. Select Finish.

  33. Reboot your machine, installation is now complete.
