Archival Guide to the Collections
of the
United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

Instructions for searching the collections:

Enter text. The system will return all instances of the text. Except for stop words (e.g., a, the, of, to, etc.), which are ignored, the search engine treats ALL text equally.

For example, if you enter the query "15" (with or without the quotation marks), you will get collections with the number 15 somewhere in their text. It may be part of the RG number (RG-15) or it might be part of a date (e.g., November 15, 1941), or something else in the text.

If you want to call back the entire contents of a record group, enter as follows: number=15 (or whatever RG# you are seeking). The search will return all members of the group including those collections that are identified by accession numbers.

If your query is a string of words, e.g., dog cat, the return will include collections that contain either dog OR cat.

If you use the query, dog and cat, the return will be those collections that include the words dog AND cat.

If you want to search for a phrase, e.g., brown dog, use quotation marks around the phrase: "brown dog".

More complex queries are possible, e.g., nested and multi-part queries. For very detailed instructions on formulating complex queries, see http://www.ushmm.org/helpdocs/inquerylang.htm

The online version of the Archival Guide has been updated in January 2003 and August 2005 to include acquisitions made by the Museum up to December 2004.
