Hinds' Precedents: Search Tips

A simple search interface provides another method of accessing sections of Hinds’ Precedents. Select a volume number (I-IV), or multiple volume numbers using the "point-click-drag" or "ctrl-point-click" method, then enter a query in the search-terms box to search the full text of the selected volume(s). Search results will identify chapters relating to the search terms entered, but the title of those chapters will not be listed.

Sample Searches (3)

The following sample searches are provided as guides to general types of searches in Hinds’ Precedents. For the sake of space, only the top three hits in search results containing more than three documents are included with each example below.

Note: The results of these sample searches are described as they appear on the Web interface. The display of the results may vary for users of the WAIS client and SWAIS software.

Subject | Volume | Chapter

1. Search by Subject

This type of search returns documents that are related to a specific subject. The word(s) that you enter as your search term(s) may appear anywhere within the document. You can use combinations of keywords to narrow your search, but make sure that Boolean operators such as "AND" appear in all capital letters.

Query: "impeachment" AND "expulsion"
Results: [Hinds Precedents -- Volume I] Chapter XV.
[Hinds Precedents -- Volume II] Chapter XLII.
[Hinds Precedents -- Volume III] Chapter LXX.

2. Search by Volume

This type of search returns documents based on volume number, and lists all of the chapters within that volume in a table of contents-style format. Also included in your search results will be a listing entitled "HINDS' PRECEDENTS". For Volume I, this listing includes the main introduction, and for all volumes, it includes a table of contents for each chapter within the volumes. Be sure to enclose the query within quotation marks, and also be sure to highlight the volume number that you are searching for. If the volume contains more than 30 chapters, it is recommended that you either expand the maximum number of records returned or narrow the query with other keywords.

Select: Hinds' Precedents, Vol. I
Query: "vol. I"
Results: [Hinds Precedents -- Volume I] HINDS' PRECEDENTS
[Hinds Precedents -- Volume I] Chapter VII
[Hinds Precedents -- Volume I] Chapter III

3. Search by Chapter

This type of search returns documents based on chapter number. The chapter citation should be phrased in the format "chapter X", where "X" is the chapter number as a Roman numeral. Since chapter numbers are not repeated in different volumes, simply searching by chapter number is specific enough to properly narrow your results. Also, if you are not sure which Volume contains a particular chapter, you can highlight any number of volumes and then perform the search. Be sure to enclose phrases within quotation marks.

Select: Hinds' Precedents, Vol. III
Query: "chapter LVII"
Results: [Hinds Precedents -- Volume III] Chapter LVII.
[Hinds Precedents -- Volume III] HINDS' PRECEDENTS
