Biographies

Bill Nichols

William P. Nichols

Title: Director, Financial Management Office (FMO), October 2006; previously Director, Procurement and Grants Office (PGO)

Responsibilities: Provides leadership and guidance in all areas of financial management, including budgeting, Congressional relations regarding appropriations, accounting systems and processes, and the annual financial statements.

First Job at CDC: Disease Intervention Specialist, Division of Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Cleveland (1983)

Path to Public Health: "I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from Wake Forest University, and a Master of Public Administration degree from Georgia State University. I have worked at CDC for 24 years, the last 12 of which have been as a senior management official within various Centers and OD offices. For my first seven years at CDC, I was involved with more grassroots public health, where I was assigned to state and local health departments implementing STD (Cleveland) and immunization (Santa Ana, California, and Raleigh, North Carolina) programs.

"From 1995-2001, I served as the Associate Director for Management and Operations (ADMO) for the National Immunization Program where I was responsible for all human, financial, and information technology resources. A highlight for me was implementing the Vaccines for Children program. During my tenure as ADMO, the United States achieved the highest immunization coverage levels and lowest vaccine-preventable disease incidence recorded up to that point. In 2001, I was detailed to CDC's Financial Management Office (FMO) as the Acting Branch Chief of the Congressional Legislative Branch, which interfaces with Congressional appropriators and helped orchestrate the myriad of Congressional visits to CDC following the World Trade Center catastrophe and the anthrax incidents. Before becoming Director of the Procurement and Grants Office (PGO) in March 2004, I served as ADMO for NCHSTP for 2 years, where I focused on internal management improvement activities and implementing the Advancing HIV Prevention initiative."
