PRESS RELEASE
TRIBAL GAMING REVENUES FOR 2002
July 7, 2003, Washington D. C.
The National Indian Gaming Commission announced today that tribal gaming revenues for 2002 totaled nearly $14.5 billion, an increase of 13% over 2001.
Phil Hogen, Chairman of the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC), today
announced that net revenues from Indian gaming grew more than 13% from 2001 to 2002, and that the industry generated $14,497,000,000 in fiscal years ending in 2002.
"The sustained growth demonstrated by 330 tribal gaming operations operated by 194 tribes speaks well of the well-run, fairly-regulated gaming businesses that Indian tribes are conducting throughout this country," Hogen said. "The public's confidence in those operations, and the patronage those operations have earned demonstrate that Indian Gaming and the economic development it brings to Indian Country have a bright future," Hogen continued.
Tribes conducting gaming operations in accordance with the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act submit their annual audit reports-to NIGC. As the fiscal years utilized by tribal operations vary, compilations of annual totals are finalized at the end of June in the following year.
The Commission also noted that data recently received had caused a slight upward revision in the tribal gaming revenue figures previously announced for 2001, from $12,735,379,000 to $12,821,703,000.
Gaming revenues represent amounts wagered less prizes paid.
The National Indian Gaming Commission is an independent federal regulatory agency created by Congress to oversee tribal governmental gaming on Indian lands. Information about the National Indian Gaming Commission is available on the Internet at: www.nigc.gov
