NIGC to Provide Guidance on Server Based Games

Washington DC, March 23, 2007 — Server based gaming is widely used in Tribal gaming operations in many states with Indian gaming.  The National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) Region V Office in Tulsa, Oklahoma recommends precautionary measures to ensure the integrity and security of these games to protect the Tribes’ gaming revenues.

Server based gaming differs from stand-alone type gaming in that it has its own unique weaknesses and vulnerabilities that need to be addressed.  In an effort to assist Tribes in securing such gaming systems, the NIGC retained an independent computer technologies group to undertake a special review and analysis related to gaming software systems being utilized by a number of tribes in the jurisdiction of the NIGC Region V office.  The objective of this examination was to determine the level of security related to the physical and network access to such systems.  The review included the following areas:

  • Network configuration;
  • Gaming operation access control for vendors to gaming equipment and computer servers;
  • Any security measures employed by the gaming operation; and
  • Casino compliance reporting methods and procedures for server based vendors.

“The NIGC is compelled to provide the Tribes advice on how they can establish internal controls to safeguard server based games” said NIGC Chairman Phil Hogen.

The NIGC is an independent regulatory agency established within the Department of the Interior pursuant to the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988.
