Supplemental environmental projects (SEPs) are a policy vehicle that can provide funding for renewable energy projects (REPs). REPs can stimulate the economy, help ensure energy security, and improve the quality of the air and water. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) designed SEPs to give companies that violate environmental regulations an alternative to standard fines. When a company violates environmental regulations, it has the option to pay a fine to the state or federal government or the company can volunteer to fund environmentally friendly projects. These projects can provide a positive outcome for the company and the community. For more information on supplemental environmental projects, please see the following publications.
