HHS Assistant Secretary for Aging Josefina G. Carbonell will join Ohio Governor Strickland and representatives of Ohio’s Departments of Aging and Insurance to launch Ohio’s Own Your Future campaign on Tuesday, April 29 at 1:30 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio. The Own Your Future campaign is a unique partnership between the federal government and states to offer a consistent message about the importance of planning ahead for long-term care.

WHO:

Josefina G. Carbonell, HHS Assistant Secretary for Aging

WHEN:

Tuesday, April 29, 2008
1:30 p.m.

WHERE:

Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging
174 E. Long Street
Columbus, Ohio 43215

Background:The Own Your Future campaign was authorized by the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 to increase general awareness about long-term care, and offer information such as: what long-term care services Medicare does and does not cover, the strengths and limitations of Medicaid for long-term care, and state and national resources to help consumers better understand their options for planning ahead.

The campaign is a collaboration of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning & Evaluation, and the Administration on Aging, and has support from the National Governors Association.

Ohio is the 18th state to launch an Own Your Future campaign. The campaign will feature a letter from Governor Strickland that will be sent to every household with a resident aged 45 – 65 encouraging Ohioans to plan for long-term care and offering a free Long-Term Care Planning Kit.  This free kit provides specific information about ways to plan ahead, legal issues to consider, and ways to assess private financing options as well as state-specific information and resources.  The kit can be accessed at www.longtermcare.gov, the Web site of the National Clearinghouse for Long Term Care Information.
