Successful Transitions: Tiffany

Tiffany Peters I came out of a blue uniform to get into a brown uniform. It's what I'm used to.
American Excellence at Work: Tiffany Peters, UPS

Current position:
Permanent Full-Time Driver
Bay City, Michigan
Military position:
Aircraft Structural Maintenance
United States Air Force (USAF)

UPS is the world's largest package delivery company and a global leader in supply chain services.

Tiffany's Story:
In the Air Force, Tiffany Peters was responsible for helping maintain the F-117A Night Hawk, the world's first operational aircraft designed to exploit low-observable stealth technology. She focused on the heat absorbing tiles that keep the aircraft from being detected by enemy infrared sensors. It was a complex, skilled job, but Tiffany wasn't quite sure how it applied to the civilian workforce.

"When I was coming out of the service, I didn't know what I wanted to do," says Tiffany. "I just knew I wanted to come home to Michigan because my family was there. Towards the end of my enlistment, I contacted my veteran representative, Rod Tanner, who had lots of resources. We discussed educational options like work study, and he set me up with interviews."

Working in the Bay City Michigan Works Service Center, Rod Tanner, Tiffany's local veterans' employment specialist, thought her attention to detail and reliability were ideal for United Parcel Service. He knew that UPS recognized the intangible benefits of veterans for their workforce.

"Even though I had maintained stealth fighters, UPS trusted that I could learn to drive their delivery trucks," says Tiffany. "They also made provisions for me to continue my education."

Tiffany's hiring authority, Talmadge Battle, Human Resources Representative for UPS said, "Veterans, in a lot of cases, make a good fit for the UPS culture. In addition to a strong work-ethic, dedication, and integrity, UPS employees are always ready to face any challenge and have a true appreciation for serving people. Veterans have shown many of these characteristics. In a service-oriented organization such as ours, these types of qualities are of great value to us."
