Information Memoranda

August 25, 1998
INFORMATION MEMORANDUM
AoA-IM-98-12

TO : STATE AND AREA AGENCIES ON AGING ADMINISTERING TITLES III AND VII OF THE OLDER AMERICANS ACT OF 1965, AS AMENDED

SUBJECT : 1997 Population Estimates of the 60+ Population for States and Territories

LEGAL AND RELATED :

REFERENCES :

The purpose of this memorandum is to transmit current estimates of the population 60 years of age and older (60+) for the states and U.S. territories. The attached table presents the most recent population estimates available from the U.S. Bureau of the Census, and will be used by the Administration on Aging to determine formula grant awards during fiscal year 1999 under Title III of the Older Americans Act. Also attached, for your information, are several other population tables by age groups.

The figures for the 50 states and the District of Columbia are population estimates as of July 1, 1997. The figures for American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, and the Virgin Islands are population counts as of April 1, 1990, and are from the 1990 Census of Population. Estimates for 1997 for these areas are not available from the Bureau of the Census. The figure shown for Puerto Rico is the estimate for July 1, 1996, the latest available from the Bureau of the Census at this time. The updated figure using July 1, 1997 data for Puerto Rico is expected to be released soon and will be used in the Title III grant formula calculation. As was the case in previous years, the Puerto Rico 60+ population estimate is based on a total population estimate for that date and the percentage of the total population which was 60+ as enumerated by the 1990 Census of Population.

EFFECTIVE DATE : None
