The following organizations are partners with the Administration
on Aging in its objective to improve access, convenience, and
affordability of transportation services for the elderly in America.

- Community
Transportation Association of America (CTAA)
The Community Transportation Association of America (CTAA) brings
together transportation providers, human service and government
agency staff, and individual advocates from across the nation
to improve mobility for all people including older persons. CTAA
acts as a legislative advocate, provider of funding to rural
transportation, and direct technical assistance and information
to public, community and human service transportation providers. CTAA
conducts research and serves as an information resource. The
Association's web site contains sources for technical assistance,
training, news; and publications including its Senior
Transportation Toolkit (PDF) and Best Practices (PDF).
- Consortium
on the Coordination of Human Services Transportation
The Consortium on the Coordination of Human Services, created by the FTA and facilitated
through the Community Transportation Association of America, has brought together
diverse organizations representing both transit and human services. This consortium
seeks to improve transportation access to health and human services through research
and education to communities, professionals, and other concerned parties. This website
contains information regarding the Consortium.
- Coordinating
Council on Access and Mobility (CCAM)
The Coordinating Council on Access and Mobility, established in 1986, serves as
a connection between the U.S. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services. The Council focuses on increasing the affordability
of and access to transportation resources. The organization’s website contains information
about the Coordinating Council, relevant publications, and links to other sites
of interest like the Transportation

- Federal
Transit Administration
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) cultivates improvements in mass transportation
systems across America. The FTA administers grant programs which assist in creating
and maintaining transit systems which allow for greater convenience, affordability,
and accessibility. As a resource for financial, technical and planning assistance,
the agency, like the AoA, seeks to improve mass transit options for the elderly.
The FTA website contains information on the agency’s various initiatives, grant
programs, and news as well as access to relevant reports and data in the National
Transit Library.
- Intelligent
Transportation System (ITS) Demonstration Program
The national Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Program of the U.S. Department
of Transportation aims to improve the safety and efficiency of surface transportation
systems in the United States. The program seeks to incorporate technologies such
as computers, electronics, communications and safety systems in transportation systems.
The ITS program focuses on highways, transit, and rail, and thus serves as a partner
to AoA in improving transportation options for the elderly. The program website
provides useful information on the program, sources for assistance, and contact
details to apply for demonstration funding.
- National
Rural Transit Assistance Program
The National Rural Transit Assistance Program, directed by the American Public Works
Association (APWA) through a consortium arrangement with the Community Transportation
Association of America (CTAA), provides training and technical assistance to the
state and local transit agencies. This website contains background information on
the National RTAP as well as links to the National Transit Resource Center, to the
National RTAP publications, and to relevant contacts.
- National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a division of the U.S.
Department of Transportation (DOT), carries out safety programs under the National
Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966 and the Highway Safety Act of 1966.
The NHTSA website contains vehicle and equipment information, traffic safety/occupant
issues, news, and various other resources.
