GM’s Robert A. Lutz: An Untold Story
“The Committee is telling a story that has not been told adequately,” acknowledges Robert A. Lutz, Vice Chairman of General Motors Product Development and Chairman of GM North America (NYSE:GM). “Past efforts always came across that it’s either your patriotic duty to hire a veteran or you’re doing a veteran a favor. The Committee is saying that it is in the best interest of America’s industry and businesses to hire veterans.”
The long-time automotive leader says that veterans are critical to “America’s productivity and economic strength.” Lutz himself served as a jet-attack aviator in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954 to 1965 and attained the rank of captain. In his 1998 book, Guts: The Seven Laws of Business That Made Chrysler the World’s Hottest Car Company, he acknowledges the importance of the necessary attributes he gained in the military. Lutz joined GM in September 2001 after a distinguished career in which he helped guide Chrysler’s much-lauded “second turnaround” to success in the 1990s.
“Veterans represent the ready workforce for the 21st century,” claims Lutz. “Veterans, regardless of their generation, have the soft skills that every employer seeks: team players with a strong work ethic, loyalty, and the ability to start a job, get it done, and finish it all the way through.”
