A videoconference-based distance learning seminar organized by
the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Bank and Partners

September 26, 2006
(see local times)

Introduction

On Tuesday, September 26, 2006, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Bank, UNICEF, World Health Organization and Partners are offering a videoconference seminar on communications planning on Avian and Human Influenza (AHI) preparedness.

The seminar, conducted through the GDLN, is designed to elaborate on the outcomes of the "Asia Regional Risk and Emergency Communication for Avian Influenza and Pandemic Preparedness Workshop" that was held by the CDC in February 2006. The workshop, held in Bangkok, was attended by communications specialists and technical experts from the Ministries of Agriculture; Public Health; Information and Culture; Education, Youth and Sports; in addition to the ASEAN Foundation, International Organization for Migration, Food and Agriculture Organization, World Health Organization, and International Emerging Infections Program-Thailand.

The objective of the workshop was to (i) assist in refining each country's own pandemic influenza and communications plans; and (ii) to establish a regional health communications network where neighboring countries could readily seek and share information on evolving AHI initiatives and plans.

Effective communications are absolutely critical both in dealing with avian flu outbreaks and in mitigating the impacts of a pandemic. All 11 projects approved thus far under the Global Program for Avian Influenza include significant communications components.

The second GDLN seminar, will re-establish links among the original workshop participants and provide a forum for countries and institutions active in implementing AHI communication policies, campaigns and programs to share their experiences, strategies and updates.
