The OTS Northeast Region headquarters lies across the Hudson River from the world’s financial center, Wall Street, in downtown New York City.
The region has supervisory responsibility for thrifts that provide banking services in the city and its boroughs, and throughout New England, the upper Mid-Atlantic States and West Virginia. The Northeast Region is home to nearly 200 thrifts, including several of the nation’s largest savings institutions. The region’s thrifts have total assets ranging from $5 million to $81 billion. Northeast Region examiners travel extensively, visiting the big cities and many small towns that make up the region. Staff members also travel abroad to examine the diverse activities of some large thrift holding companies that operate in Europe, Asia and throughout the Americas.
The region is distinguished by traditional thrifts serving local communities, a number of larger financial services firms operating on Wall Street and other internationally active companies. The region has supervisory responsibility for the supervision of large conglomerates for which OTS is the designated equivalent consolidated supervisor under European Union rules. These entities own OTS-chartered savings institutions. The complexity of these international firms and their activities requires a highly-trained, experienced staff with special expertise in many financial services products.
The Northeast region focuses on proactive supervision through strong supervisory relationships, and providing thrifts and consumers with prompt customer service.
