Monster Seminar JAM - Ecological risk assessment for effects of fishing: methods, and comparison across fisheries
Short Description: Dr. Tony D. Smith, Marine Research, CSIRO Australia.
Long Description: See also Poster PDF.

Abstract
Ecological risk assessment (ERA) has become a mandatory part of overall fishery evaluation in Australia. Federal environmental legislation requires assessments of risks from fishing, not only on target and protected species, but also on by-catch species, habitats, and marine food chains. This approach also requires consideration of risks associated with all aspects of fishing operations, not just directed fishing. The Australian Fisheries Management Authority commissioned a study to develop and apply a common framework and approach to such evaluations, which would be rigorous, comprehensive, and transparent. The project team reviewed and adapted existing approaches to ERA to come up with ERAEF (Ecological risk assessment for effects of fishing). This is a hierarchical method, which moves from comprehensive but qualitative analyses, through more directed semi-quantitative approaches, to selected model-based assessments. The overall method will be described, along with results from application to a range of Australian fisheries.
