Codfishes, dogfish, rockfishes, and other groundfishes have been harvested from Puget Sound for decades, but most fisheries and some populations have dwindled since the 1990s. While the causes of these declines are only speculative, fishing, climate change, and food web alteration may be key stressors affecting the productivity of key groundfish species. The relationship of different species to their seafloor habitats and management practices may have played a role in how these stressors have affected different populations around Puget Sound. New technology and research is leading to a more comprehensive understanding of fish and habitat distributions. These findings are better informing stock assessment and management such as providing for habitat-based surveys, area specific fisheries, and new initiatives in mapping the seafloor.
