Dr. Steven Warach received his B.S., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Michigan State University and his M.D. degree from Harvard
Medical School. In conjunction with his residency, which he did in the Harvard-Longwood Neurology Training Program, he completed
a fellowship in MRI at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. During this fellowship, he began his research developing and using
diffusion-perfusion MRI methods for the clinical diagnosis, management and investigation of acute stroke.
In 1993, he joined the neurology faculty of Beth Israel Hospital and in 1994 he was appointed chief of the hospital’s
Division of Cerebrovascular Diseases.
Dr. Warach was recruited in 1999 to join NINDS as chief of the Stroke Diagnostics and Therapeutics Section. He is the director
of the NIH Stroke Centers at Suburban Hospital and Washington Hospital Center.
His major research interests include developing and assessing novel imaging methods in the care of stroke patients, evaluating
novel stroke therapeutic strategies, investigating human stroke pathophysiology and developing and validating MRI as a surrogate
marker in drug development for stroke.
Dr. Warach is a member of the American Neurological Association and a board-certified neurologist. He has authored numerous
reports, proceedings and reviews on stroke and MR imaging of cerebrovascular disease.
