Arizona Invasive Species Advisory Council

Non-native invasive species are a leading cause of imperilment of native species and can cause severe economic hardships. Successful management strategies for invasive species require that governmental and non-governmental agencies and individuals work together to identify and address priority invasive species issues. Yet, many states lack a comprehensive strategy for addessing invasive species problems. In October 2005, RMRS Station Scientist Dr. Carolyn Hull Sieg was appointed by Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano to the Arizona Invasive Species Advisory Council. The Advisory Council was tasked with developing a consensus vision for a coordinated multi-stakeholder approach to invasive species issues and management in Arizona. The Advisory Council delivered their report, "Arizona's Invasive Species: Unwanted Plants and Animals," to the Governor in June 2006. The report outlines strategic guidance for a State Invasive Species Program in the areas of leadership and coordination, research and information management, anticipation and outreach, and control and management. Key recommendations include the establishment of: 1) an Arizona Center for Invasive Species, 2) a permanent advisory body to coordinate invasive species work in the State; and 3) an Invasive Species Database and Mapping System that is cross-jurisdictional, interactive, and is compatible and interoperable with existing databases. RMRS research on problems associated with invasive species associated with both wildfires and areas impacted by fuels management activities were featured in the report. The Advisory Council's recommendations were delivered on time and were all accepted by the Governor. This report formed the foundation for a much needed comprehensive statewide management plan for invasive species.
