Long Valley Experimental Forest

The Long Valley Experimental Forest was established in 1936 as a counterpart to Fort Valley Experimental Forest, because it is on contrasting soils (limestone/sandstone derived as opposed to basalt-derived clay loam), and because it was representative of some of the best sites and stands of ponderosa pine on the Coconino and Sitgreaves National Forests. It has been used for thinning, grazing, and regeneration studies for many years.

Soils

The soils are derived from limestone and are classified as Typic Cryoboralfs.

Vegetation

Ponderosa pine stands, unburned since 1913, and not grazed since the late 1970s, are the dominant vegetation on the forest.

Research, Past and Present

Research activities at Long Valley include a rangewide provenance planting of ponderosa pine, a burning interval effects study, and a growth history study.

Facilities

Long Valley is located about 96 km southeast of Flagstaff, Arizona, just above the Mogollon Rim, and comprises two sections (518 ha).
