Transcript:
Akinso: The National Institute on Aging, with the help of the famous poet Dr. Maya Angelou, has launched the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, the goal of which is to find 800 older adults to participate in a study aimed at identifying biological markers of memory decline and Alzheimer's disease. Ultimately, scientists hope that biological changes to the brain can be detected before memory decline and other symptoms appear, allowing the effectiveness of drugs to be evaluated at the earliest possible time. Dr. Angelou is working with researchers to ask the public, ages 55-90, to join the study through the national ADNI recruitment outreach campaign. Dr. Susan Molchan, Program Director for the ADNI project at the NIA, encourages the public to participate in this study.
Molchan: This is an opportunity to do something about memory loss and Alzheimer's disease for people. It's an opportunity to make a difference. And I'd encourage people to learn more by looking at the website sponsored by the NIH at www.alzheimers.org/imagine.
Akinso: Dr. Angelou, who has a number of friends that suffered the effects of the disease, will appear in several radio and print public service announcements. This is Wally Akinso at the National Institutes of Health Bethesda, Maryland.
