LOS ALAMOS, N.M., November 20, 2008 — Los Alamos National Laboratory employees once again demonstrated concern for their communities and those in need by pledging a record $1 million to United Way programs in Northern New Mexico and Santa Fe.

With a dollar-for-dollar match by Los Alamos National Security, LLC, which operates the Laboratory, the total contribution is more than $2 million.

"Our Los Alamos employees can take pride in this accomplishment," said Kurt Steinhaus, director of Los Alamos's Community Programs Office. "Once again, Laboratory personnel have shown through their generosity that their community is important to them and that they are eager to help those around them."

The employee contributions along with the LANS match support the United Way of Northern New Mexico, United Way of Santa Fe County and other qualifying nonprofit organizations.

"I am very proud of the fact that Laboratory employees have increased their contributions for community giving, especially at a time when the national financial crisis has made us all anxious about our own well being," said Laboratory Director Michael Anastasio, who also is president of Los Alamos National Security, LLC, which began managing the Laboratory in June 2006. Referring to the $1 million dollar match by the LANS, LLC Board, Anastasio added that "The Board and I are pleased when we can find ways to reciprocate the great support the Laboratory receives from its neighboring communities."

Los Alamos National Laboratory, a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security, is operated by Los Alamos National Security, LLC, a team composed of Bechtel National, the University of California, The Babcock & Wilcox Company, and the Washington Division of URS for the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration.

Los Alamos enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
