Transcript:
Akinso: Imagine that you're having problems breathing, with wheezing, shortness of breath, and tightness in the chest. Many older adults with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease have to cope with these symptoms on a regular basis. Doctor James Kiley, Director of the Division of Lung Diseases at the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute says that's just one of the interesting facts that you'll learn when you check out the website www.NIHSeniorHealth.gov, where COPD is being featured.

Kiley: I think that the elderly will find a vast amount of information, very valuable information about what chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is, a little bit about the symptoms that one might experience with this disease, some aspects related to treatment (and) pulmonary rehabilitation, a variety of different ways in which that materials been presented through frequently asked questions, a little quiz that people can take on important facts that they might want to understand about COPD. I think it's a very valuable website. I hope that the seniors use that extensively to really get educated about this disease.

Akinso: Dr. Kiley said smoking is the main cause of COPD. There's presently no cure for COPD, which is the 4th leading cause of death in the U.S. The website was jointly developed by the National Institute on Aging and the National Library of Medicine for older adults and their families. This is Wally Akinso at the National Institutes of Health Bethesda, Maryland.
