Marine Debris Abatement

Marine debris (litter ranging from detergent bottles to hazardous medical wastes and discarded fishing line) has become a problem along shorelines, coastal waters, estuaries, and oceans throughout the world. In addition to being unsightly, this debris poses a serious threat to everything with which it comes in contact. It can be life-threatening to marine organisms and humans and can wreak havoc on coastal communities and the fishing industry.

This Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Web site describes the sources of marine debris, legislation regulating floatable debris, the risks and consequences of marine debris, and what is being done about the problem.
