NOAA's National Ocean Service (NOS) is involved in many events of interest to the public. Some, like large oil spills, recovery of the Civil War era USS Monitor, or marine mammal strandings, often make national headlines. Others, like predicting harmful algal blooms, designating no-take protected areas in national marine sanctuaries, or routine nautical charting and tide predictions, generate less national attention. But these activities and events still are important to coastal residents and visitors and those who depend on the coastal environment for their livelihood.
