National Diabetes Education Program
Workgroups and Committees
NDEP works to improve diabetes management and help reduce the
rates of illness and death from diabetes and its complications. To send information
to many target audiences, NDEP has committees and workgroups. People in these
workgroups represent those target audiences to make sure culturally appropriate
information and materials are developed and shared. Brief access of
the work of each committee and workgroup.�
Executive Committee
Executive Committee (EC) Roles and Responsibilities: The Executive Committee will provide leadership for the NDEP as well as oversight for
establishing and implementing the program's goals, objectives, policies and activities. The Executive Committee will schedule and convene meetings of the Steering Committee to ensure that the NDEP receives the maximum benefit of Steering Committee advice and input. The Chair of the Executive Committee is also the Chair of the Steering Committee.
Executive Committee Membership: The Executive Committee will be comprised of
six members: an NIH representative, a CDC representative, the Chair of the NDEP Steering Committee, the Chair Emeritus, a Chair-Elect, and the Chair of the Operations Committee. The NIH and CDC members will appoint the NDEP Steering Committee Chair and Chair-Elect. The Executive Committee members will serve 3-year terms, with the exception of the NIH and CDC members.
Executive Committee Meetings: The Executive Committee convenes via conference call every 2 weeks and meets 4 times per year.
Executive Committee Minutes: Minutes from Executive Committee conference calls and meetings will be distributed to the Operations Committee, Steering Committee members, and others who choose to receive them via list serve.
Steering Committee
Steering Committee Roles and Responsibilities: The Steering Committee will serve in an advisory and facilitation capacity. As advisors, Steering Committee input will be sought by the EC to help shape NDEP activities. As facilitators, Steering Committee members will enable NDEP messages and materials to reach the audiences represented in their organizations, and through additional contact or collaboration, to an even wider audience. In addition, Steering Committee members will participate in NDEP work groups and play an important role implementing the NDEP Strategic Plan.
Steering Committee member responsibilities are to
- Help define and prioritize NDEP activities in accordance with emerging science.
- Actively participate in one or more work groups that plan, implement, promote and evaluate NDEP activities.
- Share and promote appropriate NDEP activities within their own organization.
- Report back to the NDEP on related activities within their organization.
- Review progress of NDEP activities in relationship to the Strategic Plan.
- Attend at least two Steering Committee meetings a year.
- Attend one Partnership Network meeting a year (usually held in conjunction with a Steering Committee meeting).
Steering Committee Membership: The Steering Committee will be comprised of member organizations selected by the EC. The Chair of the Steering Committee is also the Chair of the EC. Representatives from national, state, and local level organizations who meet one or more of the following criteria may be selected to become members of the Steering Committee:
- The organization represents essential constituents of the NDEP.
- The organization's major focus is diabetes awareness and control.
- The organization has been actively engaged in the NDEP's work group activities by taking a leadership role as a chair or co-chair.
- The organization is not currently represented but meets one or more of the criteria above and will actively promote NDEP's agenda to its constituents.
Operations Committee
The NDEP Operations Committee will coordinate efforts across the numerous facets of the NDEP. Members of the Operations Committee will represent each NDEP
work group and ensure that the needs and concerns of each work group are
directly communicated to the broader organization. Members will bring forth
ideas and perspectives from their specific work group and this will aid in
developing and endorsing of the overall NDEP Strategic Plan. Operations Committee members will also have the opportunity to learn more about other NDEP work group activities, partners, other work groups to share resources and ideas on certain projects and tasks.
Goal and Objectives: The goal of the committee is to address crosscutting issues related to NDEP activities and integrate key NDEP initiatives and messages as part of each NDEP work group's strategic plan and activities.
Operations Committee (OC) Membership: The Operations Committee will be comprised of the chair and vice-chair from each NDEP work group. A chair for the Operations Committee will be selected to lead the committee and to represent the committee on the NDEP's Executive Committee (see Operations Committee Chair).
OC Roles and Responsibilities: Operations Committee members have 3-year terms and will participate in Operations Committee meetings 2
to3 times each year. The Operations Committee meetings will be held in conjunction with Steering Committee and Partnership Network meetings. Members will also participate in quarterly conference calls.
Members will develop and endorse a 3- to 5-year Strategic Plan for the NDEP and review it annually. Members will be required to bring issues, ideas, strategies from their respective work groups to help develop the overall NDEP strategic plan. Members will be responsible for leading their work groups in
integrating of the overall NDEP Strategic Plan into their respective work groups' strategic plan and activities. Each NDEP work group will develop a written 1
to 3 year strategic plan that provides support for the overall NDEP's Strategic Plan.
Operations Committee Chair: The Operations Committee Chair is appointed for a 3-year term and may be reappointed once. The Chair should be in his/her second term as chair of a NDEP work group (To avoid overburdening the Chair, this individual may opt to cease serving as a chair of a work group, but may participate in one or more work groups as desired). The Chair will represent the interests of the Operations Committee on the NDEP Executive Committee. Therefore, in addition to the 2
to 3 Operations Committee meetings per year and quarterly conference calls, the chair will participate in the quarterly meetings and biweekly conference calls of the Executive Committee.
African American/African Ancestry Workgroup
The African American/African Ancestry (AAAA) Workgroup addresses diabetes awareness and educational
issues that affect the African American community and African Ancestry
communities. The workgroup has representatives
from leading minority organizations, and publications, medical, and government
organizations who develop culturally appropriate initiatives and promote diabetes
awareness campaigns geared to African American audiences.
American Indian/Alaska Native Workgroup
The American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Workgroup develops and promotes culturally appropriate
diabetes educational materials and messages for the American Indian and Alaska
Native communities. The workgroup has representatives from leading minority,
medical, educational, and government organizations.
Asian American Pacific Islander Workgroup (AAPI)
The AAPI Workgroup has representatives from national Asian health organizations,
Asian community-based organizations, diabetes educators, and health professionals
who work for federal agencies, state health departments, universities, and hospitals
who have a special interest in Asian health issues. Almost all AAPI Workgroup
members are of Asian descent, and have extensive expertise and experience with
Asian patient populations in of diabetes control, education, or research.
AAPI Workgroup members advise and consult to develop and
promote NDEP materials, messages, and principles. Workgroup members participate
on conference calls, and approximately two, face-to-face meetings a year.
Business Health Strategy Workgroup
The Business Health Strategy (BHS) Workgroup works to increase awareness of
the clinical and economic benefits of quality diabetes care and prevention
at the worksite.
The BHS Workgroup represents a diverse group of individuals, including occupational
health medicine, worksite wellness, and promotion management at Fortune 500
companies, state diabetes prevention control program (DPCP) officers, and administrative
service managers at health management organizations (HMOs) and managed care
organizations.
Diabetes in Children and Adolescents Workgroup
The Diabetes in Children and Adolescents
(DCA) Workgroup addresses awareness and education issues that pertain
to children with diabetes in medical, school, and community environments.
The workgroup is comprised of representatives from leading diabetes,
pediatric, primary care, nutrition, and education organizations.
Health Care Professional Workgroup
The Health Care Professional (HCP) Workgroup promotes
comprehensive diabetes care in clinical practice to providers and patients.
The HCP workgroup helps close the gap between current and desired diabetes
care, focusing on educating providers about the benefits of controlling
the ABCs of diabetes — A1C, Blood Pressure, and Cholesterol. The
workgroup consists of representatives from leading diabetes, endocrine, primary
care, nutrition, and education organizations.
Hispanic/Latino Workgroup
The Hispanic/Latino Workgroup addresses
diabetes awareness and educational issues for the Hispanic/Latino
community. The workgroup consists of representatives from leading
medical, national advocacy, and community-based organizations that assist CDC and NIH (National
Institutes of Health) on developing culturally appropriate initiatives
geared towards Hispanic/Latino audiences.
Older Adults Workgroup
The Older Adults (OA) Workgroup develops
diabetes educational materials and messages appropriate for persons age
60 years and older.� The OA workgroup consists of representatives from government,
health care, education, and nonprofit sectors working on initiatives geared
towards the older adult population.
Pharmacy, Podiatry, Optometry, and Dental Professionals
Workgroup (PPOD)
The PPOD Workgroup promotes the principles of NDEP by using
their respective organizations and providers to increase awareness of and access
to quality care for people with diabetes. This workgroup has representatives
from the pharmacy, podiatry, optometry, and dentistry fields, who advise and
consult to develop and promote NDEP materials, messages, and principles.�
