Machinist Apprenticeship Program: hands-on education, experienceLos Alamos National Laboratory sponsors the Machinist Apprenticeship Program (MAP), a comprehensive apprenticeship training program for prototype machinists. The program provides apprentices with classroom instruction and on-the-job experience in machine tool operations. Apprentices work under a professional machinist and receive the education and experience required for certification from the New Mexico State Apprenticeship Council as journeyman machinists. In collaboration with Northern New Mexico College (NNMC), the Laboratory restored this program to relieve the need for certified machinists here. The Laboratory provides staff for hands-on practical training and the college provides space for the off-site shop and related classroom instruction. Basic training, typically two years, is provided at NNMC; advanced training in the third and fourth years is provided in several LANL staff shops. Apprentices receive a salary during their tenure, according to the MAP salary structure and budget. Future employment at LANL of program graduates is based on budget, staffing needs, and performance. MAP is open to all Laboratory and non-Laboratory U.S. citizens over 18 years old. Applicants must be able to obtain a Department of Energy Q clearance. Applicants should have a high-school diploma and an aptitude in mechanics/machining. For information on application requirements and processes, contact the MAP office's administrative specialist. |
