DR. MICHAEL R. ANASTASIO, Ph.D. Dr. Anastasio has been the Director of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) since June 1, 2006, and is President of the Los Alamos National Security, LLC. The Laboratory is a principal contributor to the Department of Energy’s programs to maintain the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile and to reduce the international dangers posed by weapons of mass destruction. Prior to his current position, Dr. Anastasio was the Director of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory from 2002 to 2006. Dr. Anastasio has received numerous commendations and is widely recognized for his leadership in national security science and the safe stewardship of nuclear weapons. He is the recipient of the 1990 DOE Weapons Recognition of Excellence Award for technical leadership in nuclear design. The award acknowledged Anastasio's outstanding theoretical and experimental contributions to understanding boost physics. He began his career at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory as a physicist dealing with the science of nuclear weapons design. Dr. Anastasio was appointed the Associate Director for Defense and Nuclear Technologies and it was during this tenure that he was instrumental in the development and execution of the national Stockpile Stewardship Program. His emphasis on the design, evaluation, and understanding of nuclear systems allowed him to become a respected leader of this program which is designed to sustain the safety, security and reliability of America’s nuclear weapons stockpile. Subsequently, Dr. Anastasio served as the Deputy Director for Strategic Operations with the portfolio of the responsibility for all laboratory operations and national security programs. He has served in the capacity of scientific adviser at the Department of Energy and has provided scientific advice to senior members of the department on various national security science issues. Dr. Anastasio has taught at Brooklyn College of CUNY and performed research in Theoretical Nuclear Physics at the Center for Nuclear Studies in Saclay, France and at the Nuclear Research Center in Julich, West Germany. He has also served on various committees, including the following: National Academy of Sciences Committee on S & T for Countering Terrorism; the United States Strategic Command, Strategic Advisory Group; California Council on Science and Technology; and the Blue Ribbon Task Force on Nanotechnology. He received his B.A in physics, with honors, from The Johns Hopkins University and earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in theoretical nuclear physics from the State University of New York, Stony Brook. |
